EMEF builds 356 freight cars for Bosnia
Following the celebration of a loan agreement between Portugal and the Republic of Bosnia & Hercegovina estimated in 32 million euros, EMEF signed a contract, back in April 2005, with Bosnia & Hercegovina’s Railways in order to modernize their railway system, which contemplated the reconditioning of 211 freight cars and the construction of an additional 28 Tadns, 28 Habis and 300 EAS-z freight cars.
The reconditioning of the 211 freight cars is taking place, naturally, at Bosnia & Hercegovina, with an additional subcontract established with a local company which works under direct supervision of the EMEF workers temporarily assigned there.
The technical diversity, derived from the construction of three series of freight cars and their dimensions, led to the establishment of additional subcontracts in several fronts. The conception and construction of the smaller two series, with a total of 56 freight cars, were assigned to Metalsines, a recognized company within the freight car construction area of business, with EMEF’s supervision, which under the established subcontract develop that work in our premises.

We first have to go back to where EMEF came from, spawning from the former CP Industrial Section. The Board of Directors back then assessed EMEF’s resources as surpassing the company’s needs, meaning that not only it had a full staff, as well as premises and equipment which were superior to CP’s needs. Therefore, instead of downsizing, CP decided to maximize and channel that excess in ability to produce, by garnering additional external clients for EMEF, other than CP, with which it worked exclusively with before that.
